Story from the NY Times. It is amazing how difficult it is for government to just do the right thing. After reading this story you will understand why there is still so much to do in our country to mend the mistakes and wrongs done by some of those who came before.

The Pope s PR Man
By Paul | June 30, 2010
This is incredibly creative and incredibly funny. Quote below from the original piece, the voice is the Pope’s PR team.
“Another major point is your branding. I think you’re confusing the peeps. Nowadays it’s all about niche marketing. You have to find a niche and stick. You’re anti-abortion and that’s cool. Polling indicates that a lot of young people are increasingly pro-life so that’s a good move. You saw ahead of the trend and I give you mad props for that. But if you’re pro-life you’re a conservative and that’s fine. There’s a lot of them out there but then you come out and criticize the excesses of capitalism. You’re killing the brand Benny. You’re making my life a lot harder too. But I’m here for you.”

“Facebook tops in online evidence in Divorce Cases
By Paul | June 29, 2010
The inability of some folks to understand that what they do in social media realms, is breathtaking. One more time folks, if you put “it” online, whether in an email, IM, web page, discussion board, or any other elctronic dissemination, by the very structure of the Internet, “it” lives forever and is, in effect, public domain. On the other hand, in regards to this story, it is nice to see trashy people hoisted-on-their-own petard, so to speak.
From the article, and edited slightly,
“– Husband goes on Match.com and declares his single, childless status while seeking primary custody of said nonexistent children.
– Husband denies anger management issues but posts on Facebook in his “write something about yourself” section: “If you have the b#$@s to get in my face, I’ll kick your a&$ into submission.”
– Father seeks custody of the kids, claiming (among other things) that his ex-wife never attends the events of their young ones. Subpoenaed evidence from the gaming site World of Warcraft tracks her there with her boyfriend at the precise time she was supposed to be out with the children. Mom loves Facebook’s Farmville, too, at all the wrong times.
– Mom denies in court that she smokes marijuana but posts partying, pot-smoking photos of herself on Facebook.”

Abdul-Jabbar says NBA entry age should be 21 – NBA – Yahoo! Sports
By Paul | June 27, 2010
— He said 6-11 center Nate Thurmond, who played for Golden State, Chicago and Cleveland, was his toughest matchup.
“A lot of guys beat on me and said they played good defense. Nate actually used skill and knowledge of the game to play against me and make my evenings more difficult when I had to play him,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He was everything a professional center should be.”

Ending a Friendship on Principle
By Paul | June 26, 2010
It is always sad when a friendship ends but this week I needed to end one. Think of what it might have been like in post Civil War, or during the Vietnam era, or even this last decade where individual’s had to take a stand and decide whether to respect the other person’s opinion and allow them to have it. Invariably they throw out that dumb line “I may disagree with you but I will fight for your right to say it.” That line is a great idea but I there are times when you can say, “yeah, no, your side has aired their dumb-ass ideas and we have decided they don’t work and are dangerous.”
Example. Should the Nazis have marched in Illinois years ago. The courts said yes, I said no. We spent billions of dollars, and millions of lives dealing with them and they shouldn’t get to speak anymore. And yes, I am a writer and love the first amendment but how many times do we have to solve the same damn problem.
So this last week, a former friend revealed their anti-Semitic side. It was a complete surprise; I never would have predicted. This individual is smart, educated, young, creative, but apparently does not respect the Jewish heritage, nor I suspect any religion. The expressed opposition was based on nothing but a rejection of an ancient and beautiful faith and was done unkindly. Took me 30 minutes to make a decision.
Sometimes you have to leave people where they are and move on, still it’s sad.

Someone in Baltimore defended Art Modell on a Cleveland site!
By Paul | June 25, 2010
This person wrote:
Give it a rest small-minded Cleveland fans … Art was, and is, a great man who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.Forget your pettiness for a minute and look back at all of the innovations he brought to the game (football doubleheaders, tons of special promotional nights, etc.).
He also was largely responsible for revenue sharing which helps small market teams like the Browns continue to exist. He also brought Jim Brown to Cleveland and creatively figured out how to bring in Bernie Kosar through the supplemental draft.
During Art’s tenure, the Browns made the post season 17 times, won 11 division titles and a league championship. How have they fared since Art left? He also brought a Super Bowl Championship to Baltimore. Maybe he knows what he’s doing after all.
I think the reason so many of you blue-collar Clevelanders hate Art is that he was a Republican and proud of it. So cut him some slack and a little forgiveness and realize that he was the best owner Cleveland ever had.
My response: I certainly appreciate your thoughtful comments on this hometown issue. I have suggestion, c’mon over to Cleveland, we will trot down to the neighborhood pub where we have sweated, swore and loved these Browns and we can have a really delightful conversation. I know my fellow Clevelanders will treat you with the courtesy and respect you deserve… no worries, The Cleveland Clinic is excellent, just don’t tell the attending physician you were defending the former owner of OUR Cleveland Browns.
Why don’t you fight to get your colts back, oh that’s right, couldn’t summon the gumption to get that done.
Enjoy Baltimore, we have our Cleveland. Now get off our board!

Op-Ed Contributor – Lose a General, Win a War – NYTimes.com
By Paul | June 24, 2010
Anyone who has served knew the President could not keep the leadership in place as it was. The military is unforgiving of mistakes but lives are at stake; it must be.
“In the longer term, the Army has to return to its tradition of getting rid of leaders who are failing. The Navy has shown more fortitude; in the first two months of this year alone it fired six commanders of ships and installations. On Tuesday, it fired the skipper of the frigate John L. Hall, two months after it collided with a pier at a Black Sea port in Georgia. The Navy stated simply, as it usually does in such cases, that the officer’s superior had lost confidence in him. That is all that is needed.
The Marine Corps has also largely kept the tradition of relieving officers — most notably during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 when its top ground officer, Maj. Gen. James Mattis, fired the commander of the First Marine Regiment. “
