New Mexico is one step away from abolition!
Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:34 pm (PDT)
On Friday the New Mexico Senate debated HB 285 (Death Penalty Repeal Bill) then passed the bill 24-18. This was the final step before the bill could be sent to the Governor for his signature or veto.
Yesterday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson said he had not yet decided whether to veto or sign the bill into law. Richardson stated that he wants to hear from the public before making his decision. Governor Richardson has until Wednesday, March 18 to veto or sign the bill. If the Governor signs the repeal bill, New Mexico will be the first state to abolish the death penalty since New Jersey did in 2007.
