New Mexico has just repealed the death penalty! 3.18.09
By Paul | March 19, 2009
New Mexico has just repealed the death penalty! Today Governor Bill Richardson signed a bill to replace the death penalty with life without the possibility of parole.
Last year it was New Jersey, now New Mexico. We’re working to make Montana next, with more states to follow! This year a long list of states introduced death penalty moratorium and repeal bills and have seen more progress than ever before. Our movement is growing by leaps and bounds and EJUSA is there at every step supporting state campaigns. We help organizations build their base from the ground up, utilize scarce resources wisely, and implement savvy and flexible strategies to get the job done.
We’re on the ground now working closely with the campaign in Montana to make them the next state to end the death penalty. The Republican-controlled Senate in Montana has passed the repeal bill and it will now be heard in the evenly divided House beginning on March 25. If you want to see New Mexico’s victory spread to Montana and other states – become a real trend – support the work of EJUSA with a donation today.
Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the New Mexico Coalition to Repeal the Death Penalty, to NCADP, Amnesty International, and to everyone else who worked hard to make repeal a reality in New Mexico.
